Meet David Castro
I'm David Castro and after a long career as an Emmy and Cable Ace Award nominated writer-producer in network television (Married with Children, Not Necessarily the News, many others) I wrote my first play - Man's Dominion - in 2013 and it premiered at the 2014 Hollywood Fringe Festival where it was extended twice. The production team - Pachyderm Productions - is now taking the play in 2015 to Chicago, Toronto, Orlando and NYC and hopefully elsewhere. Man's Dominion tells the story of the 1916 lynching of Mary the circus elephant in the small Blue Ridge town of Erwin, Tennessee in 1916. I wrote it as a one-man show for my friend, Tim Powell, a native Southerner able to do the various regional accents the play demanded. He plays townspeople, circus folk and even Mary herself as he tells the story.
My second play - Orson Welles & Scatman Crothers in A HOLLYWOOD ENDING - is a two-hander which tells the story of the last job for each man - voicework on The Transformers: The Movie in 1985. We meet Welles and the Scatman as they meet in the Hollywood audition room and watch as they discuss their varied careers, race, sex, politics and the actor's life. This show will have its premiere on June 7th, 2015 at the 2015 Hollywood Fringe Festival and will play 4 more performances before, hopefully, having a life and legs of its own.
Odly enough, I had studied playwrighting in college (CCNY, '72) where I had a double-major in Journalism and Theatre. I was lucky enough to have studied with both Israel Horovitz and John Guare but soon found myself doing stand-up in San Francisco in 1976 and writing for seemingly scores of comics over the years. It was in 2013 at the still tender age of 62 that I wrote my first play - Man's Dominion. The constant reinvention and learning continues.
See you 'round the theatre.
