Synopsis:
St. Bernards, a magnificent Episcopal church in mid-town Manhattan, designed by Stanford White one hundred years ago, is facing problems: a dwindling congregation, lack of focus for the future, and expensive repairs to the structure. The vestry, facing the problems head-on, and hoping to initiate a major fundraising campaign, seek out a new and energetic Rector, the Rev. Randall Brainerd of Atlanta. Soon after the Rector's arrival, however, the well-heeled and traditional vestry members are surprised and shocked by Dr. Brainerd's behavior and his plans for the church. The vestry and the charismatic Rector battle it out as the play examines questions about faith and priorities: Given the choice of saving an irreplaceable edifice or losing the imposing structure but as a result perhaps gaining two to three million dollars a year to do charitable work, what would you choose? What, indeed, is your faith based upon? Also central to the action and issues of the play are decisions based on “class distinctions,” architecture, and real estate. Whose motives are sincere? Who is acting “in good faith?” In the end, it is up to the congregation to decide, and the results are surprising.
