About Mark Whicker
Mark Whicker is an old writer but a young playwright. He was a columnist at the Orange County Register for exactly 35 years, retiring on Feb. 1 2022. Before that he worked at newspapers in Philadelphia, Dallas and Winston-Salem, was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Hall of Fame, won the Nat Fleischer Award for distinguished writing on boxing, and was twice named as one of America's 10 best sports columnists by the Associated Press Sports Editors.
In 2020 he enrolled in Diana Burbano's playwriting class at South Coast Repertory.
His play Vote For Herbert had a staged reading on July 31, 2021 at Newport Arts Theater Center in Newport Beach, and Bless This Divorce had a staged reading on Feb. 26, 2022 at Grand Central Art Theater in Santa Ana.
In June of 2022 his 10-minute play, MMXX, was performed over two weekends by actors at Clairmont Act One, a theater in San Diego. He has six other plays listed on New Play Exchange.
On May 13 of 2023 his play Bailey Drake had a staged reading at Grand Central as well.
His 10-minute play The V Squad was read via Zoom at an ALAP festival in October of 2022.
He lives in Long Beach with wife Robyn and son Philip.
