About Mona Deutsch Miller

Mona Deutsch Miller, a Life Member of ALAP, writes plays, short stories and screenplays.  She was born in Florida, grew up in Manhattan and moved to California for Stanford Law School.  As a New Yorker, she was drawn to the big city on the West Coast, and moved to Los Angeles with her lawyer husband.  She recently retired from the practice of law, so her writing is no longer interrupted by that demanding day job.  She has written since childhood.  When she discovered an unfinished short story she had started on a "slow day at the office," she realized, I'm a writer.

She has had approximately 14 plays produced in Los Angeles and other parts of the U.S. and looks forward to many more productions.  This queen of the 10-minute play has written over 25 10-minute plays, one of which is included in "Best Ten-Minute Plays of 2020," edited by Lawrence Harbison, and another of which is in Lisa Soland's "30 Short Plays for Passionate Actors."  She writes in multiple genres, including comedy, black comedy, historical, drama, absurdist and sci fi.  Three of her short stories, a magazine feature and an essay have been published, and some of her monologues have been published.  In 2014, she participated as a producer and writer in the 48-Hour Film Project, and made an 8-minute silent movie, "In Sickness and in Health."

She is also a long-time member of Fierce Backbone, a theatre company devoted to the development of new plays, the Dramatists Guild, the Facebook Group Honor Roll of Women Playwrights Over 40, and LAFPI.

Mona did a series of interviews in 2021 on the Stage Explorations website about ALAP, but in this interview, she speaks about her life and playwriting.
