Singularities
by Maria Viera Beatty
Runtime: 90 mins
Cast: 6 females, 1 male
Synopsis:
Drifting through his twenties and thirties, Charles is making a documentary explaining his life, his loves, and his loneliness. The play is a love story that never happens; it is about missed opportunities and paths not taken, randomness, and ships that pass in the night. Charles is a singularity: a point in space, time or the continuum of thought where we can say for certain that there is information we can never know.
Notes: The play could be cast with six different female actors playing the women in Charles' life, however, although incredibly challenging, ideally the same female actor could play all six of the women's roles. Also note Charles' monologues to the camera could be projected live onto a screen as well as pre-recorded (and edited) videos of the interviews with the women. Also close ups of the women when they are first introduced and title cards showing the division of the play's structure: Promising Beginnings, Perpetual Presents, Creative Destruction, and Endless Ending can be projected. Although not necessary, the play was written to support mixed media elements.
