About Nalsey Tinberg

Nalsey Tinberg is the author of three produced full-length plays.  Most recently,  her semi-autobiographical play  Cakewalk was part of Houston's Main Stage season, produced in November 2011 to outstanding reviews. It had been previously produced as a staged reading as part of the NY Chapter of the Television Academy's play reading series hosted by Arlene Dahl on March 15, 2004, and was read at the Manhattan Theatre Club. Cakewalk was awarded the second prize in the Open Book Play Competition 2006. As Christmas Babies, the play was produced at the Laurelgrove Theater in Los Angeles and well received during the spring of 2002.  Her play Musical Chairs was produced at the Stella Adler Theatre in 2004.  Bearing Witness was also produced at the Stella Adler in 1998 after first being given a workshop production at LATC (Los Angeles Theater Center) under the auspices of its writers' group, Wordsmiths.  Bearing Witness was also produced as a staged reading at the New Plays Festival at the Jewish Ensemble Theater in West Bloomfield, Michigan in April 2000.  Most recently Bearing Witness was performed at the JCA in Yonkers  in conjunction with the Jewish Braille Institute as a staged reading in the Fall of 2008.

 

Her most recent play, A Teachable Moment, is set in well-to-do women's college in 2010.   A Pultizer prize winning tenured history professor is found to have fabricated his own Viet Nam War history, a situation which causes mayhem at the college. A metaphor for today's political "half-truths", the play is ideal for theaters looking to educate while entertaining.

Nalsey is a member of the Dramatists Guild, Alliance for Los Angeles Playwrights, and a member of Theatre West and the Association of Jewish Theatres.  

Five of Nalsey's ten minute plays have also been produced. The Lawyers was produced as part of The Bar Off  Melrose at the Melrose Theater and later published by Samuel French.  After joining The Playwrights Group (TPG), her Four Chairs was produced by them in the summer of 1999.  Seeing is Believing  and Long Island Ice Tea were produced as part of  TPG's productions at the Tamarind Theater in 2000 and 2001, respectively. Dummy in the Carpool Lane was a finalist in the Secret Rose Theatre 10 Minute Play Competition in North Hollywood and produced in conjunction with Theatre 40 as part of Benchmarks in May 2005. The one act play Back to the Barbizon was produced at Theatre 40 followed by her latest short play Tuskegee Man this June as part of Deskapades.

 

Nalsey is a graduate of UCLA and received her Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Warwick in England.  She is a professor at Occidental College.
